The Essentials
MAGIX’s New
Essential Effects Plug-in Suite
The Essential Plug-ins where
developed at the request of working professionals for a high
quality, low resource effect plug-in with a compact graphic user
interface (GUI).
Developed by Magix’s plug-in guru Sascha Eversmeier for the
version 11 release of Samplitude and Sequoia, the GUI’s layout
is standardized throughout the series for ease of use and fast
results. The suite consists of a Compressor, Chorus and Flanger,
Stereo Delay, Reverb, and Phaser. Today we are going to look at
a couple unique features contained within this suite.
You can download the presets mentioned in this article here:
Essential Presets
Essential Compressor
The Compressor has the standard threshold, attack/release and ratio
controls. Also available is side chaining, selectable between
internal, controlled by the SC filter control, or external, which is
assignable to other source tracks within the project. The
attack/release’s feel and sound is different from any other
compressor in the Samplitude series. The attack is able to get that
fast 1176 style “grab” without collapsing the sound, while the very
fast release times can combined with the super fast attack for a
nice amount of intermodulation distortion, caused by the quick
change in volume being applied to the signal.
I have included a couple of good 1176 type presets and a preset
modeled after Eclectica Studio’s DBX 128, which contains the famous
DBX 160 compressor. Simply download the preset and place them in the
Samplitude folder, in the MAGIX Plugins\essentialFX\Presets folder.
Of course the compressor presets go into the compressor folder.
Then the presets will be available with-in the plug-in’s preset drop
down menu.

Essential Chorus/Flanger

Next up is the Chorus/Flanger plug-in. This is a great all-round
chorus and flanger. I have included here presets modeled after the
DeltaLabs Effectron II unit here in the studio too.
This is a great MONO chorus that helps make bass guitars and other
bass sources gain a musical fullness without the movement a stereo
chorus can introduce.
I have also included my favorite stereo chorus setup for a classic
Rhodes piano.

Essential Stereo Delay

The Stereo Delay unit is fantastic.
The Stereo Delay contains all of the features you’d expect from a
modern digital delay: feedback control that produces either a
ping-pong repeating or standard stereo, sync to tempo, variable
dampening, and selection between digital and analog emulations. It
really captures nicely the flavor of an analog delay line. The
dampening combined with the feedback control yields a great musical
result.
I have included a preset that is near and dear to my heart--my own
personal emulation of a Radio Shack reverb unit from the early 80’s.
Others have created plug-ins to emulate it but the Essential’s
Stereo Delay nails the musical charm of the original without
modeling the noise. I didn’t like the noise or transistor distortion
then, but loved the unique “echo-reverb” sound that sits beautifully
into a mix.
